Steven Yates

Experience
Since 1995 my focus has been protecting Intellectual Property (IP), primarily with patents since they are the strongest form of IP.

Over the years I have acquired extensive experience in a variety of areas including preparing and prosecuting patents; developing corporate patenting strategy, training, and harvesting; establishing patent purchasing programs; Special Interest Group (SIG) adoption impact analysis; and offensive and defensive patent analysis.

Throughout my patent attorney career, my focus has been on on patenting computer software and hardware. From 2000-2006 at Intel, I have focused on software inventions, and I managed a huge software patent portfolio for 5 years. As of 2007, I have moved on to the architecture (processor!) patent portfolio!! This is an unbelievable opportunity that will be very exciting.

Prior to my life in IP, I had a general civil Litigation and criminal defense focus and have been fortunate enough to have a few court room experiences.

FYI: just for fun, I originally ran this Linux server on a Pentium Pro 166 home-built spare-parts machine using Redhat 9 and a cable modem.... More recently I upgraded to a $400 Celeron 2.2 GHz e-Machine. Good bang for the buck at the time! And SPEEDY! (Remember the context.) I have upgraded the OS from Redhat 9 to Fedora Core 3. Painless upgrade--until GRUB failed for reasons unknown. That was not fun. Lilo worked, though, and I got this system on line again. After getting tired of the Lilo kludge I tried various later flavors of Fedora. They seem pretty good, but I have to admit, I have tried and really like Ubuntu. The next server may be based on that.... Also, incidentally, this page is hand coded by me. No generators. Hence this remains a simple page. If I create you a custom sub-page, it'll be neater. Oh, and depending on which domain you got here from (e.g., not stevenyates.com), this domain may be for sale.)

As of 2000, I have worked at Intel Corporation. While surviving at Intel is often hard, the tremendous technical and personal benefits make the effort worthwhile. On the technical side, the breadth of issues available to address, unbelievable brain trust with which to work, and control over the direction and rise of my career is second to none. On the personal side, there has never been a question that family comes first when circumstance requires I address urgent issues, and Intel solidly supports telecommuting, something that makes working occasional long hours feasible, and flexible schedules possible. As for the anemic stock market, I expect things will turn around for Intel.

Prior to Intel, I worked at at Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman, LLP at their Lake Oswego (now Beaverton), Oregon office. BSTZ is an excellent place to work. Started in 1975, from its inception, the firm has focused on protecting intellectual property rights (e.g, patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and related agreements and litigation). Over time the firm has grown to be one of the largest IP firms in the United States, representing some very interesting high-technology companies.

Prior to BSTZ, I worked at Klarquist Sparkman Campbell Leigh & Whinston, LLP in downtown Portland, Oregon. Klarquist is also a good place to work, has a top-notch staff, and interesting clients.

Prior to my experiencing the West Coast up close and personal, I worked at Bromberg & Sunstein, an excellent firm in Boston..

Shakespeare (on law school?)
I am resolved; 'tis but a three years' fast:
The mind shall banquet, though the body pine:
Fat paunches have lean pates, and dainty bits
Make rich the ribs, but bankrupt quite the wits.
